Jobs Vocabulary

Deciphering the meaning of different job titles is simpler in Arabic than in English because the job name and related nouns usually share the same Arabic root letters. For example, a chef (طباخ/ة) cooks in a kitchen (مطبخ) and a nurse (ممرض/ة) treats people who are sick (مريض/ة). The challenge in Arabic is in figuring out when to add a م to the beginning of a word or an ا part way through to correctly transform an adjective or object into a profession. Unfortunately, there’s no set rule.

So, we’ve compiled a list of common professions and some related workplace vocabulary as a resource to refer back to. There are so many jobs out there that didn’t make it onto this list. If you want to add your job or another common one to the list, please email us at fikalam@outlook.com and we’ll start a jobs list round 2!
