#TeamMaha takes its name from the star of the Arabic textbook series, Al-Kitaab. If you studied Fusha at university or high school in the US, you’re likely familiar with Maha. For those of you who aren’t, a glance at this video will tell you all you need to know about studying with Maha. Luckily, #TeamMaha is less annoying and more entertaining than its namesake, and features primarily colloquial Arabic content.
#TeamMaha this is one of the most fun and useful resources I’ve found so far for colloquial Arabic grammar. It’s a blog-style Arabic learning site run by two Arabic-English translators, Caitlyn, who specializes in the Egyptian dialect, and Chris, who focuses on the Syrian dialect. They dissect songs, sayings, and other text-based content, highlighting useful grammar structures and roots. The level of detail in the translations and notes can be overwhelming at times, but it’s often presented in a humorous way. #TeamMaha has both helped me get a grasp on when and how to use phrases like على كيفك and added to my ever-growing dictionary of insults and profanities.
To navigate the site, you can filter by tags like dialect or genre. Posts can be a bit sporadic but, if you’re new to the site, there’s plenty of content there to keep you entertained until the next post!
